Wednesday May 14th, 6:00 – 10:00P
Talking Circle: 7:00 - 8:30P
Please arrive by 6:45P
In times of mental and emotional struggle, how do we care for ourselves? How can we support others while honoring our own well-being? This event is a space for open conversation where participants can share their experiences, challenges, and insights on self-care and support during difficult times. Together, we’ll explore the balance between personal well-being and being there for others, embracing the power of holding space with honesty and compassion.
The event begins with a private tour of the exhibition, followed by the talking circle, led by Tyvette Symone.
What Happens at a Talking Circle?
A talking circle is a space for open, honest conversation where everyone is heard and respected. It’s a practice rooted in many Indigenous traditions, designed to create a sense of connection and understanding. There’s no hierarchy—just a group of people coming together to listen, share, and support one another.
During a talking circle, we take turns speaking, often using a talking piece (an object passed around to indicate whose turn it is). There’s no pressure to share—listening is just as valuable. The focus is on speaking from personal experience rather than giving advice, allowing everyone to express themselves freely without judgment.
To create a safe and respectful space, we follow a few simple ground rules:
- Speak from personal experience using “I” statements.
- Listen with an open mind and without interrupting.
- Avoid giving advice—everyone’s journey is unique.
- What’s shared in the circle stays in the circle.
- Show respect for all voices, whether spoken or silent.
This is a space for reflection, connection, and mutual support. Whether you choose to share or simply listen, you are a valued part of the circle. The goal is not to solve problems but to hold space for one another with compassion and care.
